The Coal, Petroleum, and Gas Embedded in the Sectoral Demand-and-Supply Chain: Evidence from China

Abstract: The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number seven expressly calls for universal access to affordable and sustainable energy. Energy sustainability will require a reduction in energy consumption, including embedded energy consumption in sectoral demand and supply chains. However, few studies have estimated the amount of coal, petroleum, and gas (fossil fuel) embedded in demand-and-supply chains (FFEDS). Furthermore, the inter-and intra-sectoral energy linkages are understudied. This study quan… Show more

“…On the other hand, sharp fluctuations in energy prices have had a significant impact, with rapid price declines not conducive to energy exporting countries; however, sharp price increases are unfavorable for energy importing countries, and exporting countries are affected by energy price vulnerability [6]. If the general trend of energy prices cannot be well grasped and a safe energy guarantee mechanism cannot be established, it will bring challenges to the sustainable development of the country [7,8]. Likewise, food sustainability is one of the main concepts for achieving global sustainable development [9].…”

“…For example, the gross margin of Sinopec fell by 2.6% due to the increased procurement cost of raw materials. Companies need to consider strategies to optimize procurement and manage costs, perhaps by locking in prices when possible or exploring more cost-effective suppliers [2].…”

“…Given the increased pre-tax profits from 2020 to 2022, measures to manage production costs may bear fruit. Energy efficiency could be another area of focus for cost reduction, given the industry's significant energy [2].…”

“…As the only country quickly recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, electricity demand in China increased by 10% in 2021. The 56% rise in electricity demand in China required coal consumption [3,4], which makes it difficult to promote the progress of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, i.e., affordable and clean energy. The greenhouse gas generated by the household sector related to electricity and heating energy accounts for more than 30% of that by all sectors [5].…”
