The cognitive and behavioral correlates of functional status in patients with frontotemporal dementia: A pilot study

Abstract: Objective: Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) impinges significantly on cognition, behavior, and everyday functioning. Goal of the present study is the detailed description of behavioral disturbances and functional limitations, as well as the investigation of associations between cognition, behavior, and functional impairment among FTD patients. Given the importance of maintaining a satisfying functional status as long as possible, this study also aims to identify the cognitive correlates of compensatory strategy u… Show more

“…A majority of the included studies emphasize the significance of executive deficits, including impairment in working memory, inhibitory control, and switching abilities, in predicting longitudinally patients’ performance in tasks of daily living, particularly IADL tasks [ 12 , 23 , 29 ]. It appears that the role of executive functions in maintaining functional independence in bvFTD patients is of major importance [ 7 ]. Individuals with a milder degree of executive function impairment at baseline tend to experience a slower rate of functional decline over time, compared to those with a more pronounced executive dysfunction.…”

“…Apathy represents a multifaceted neurobehavioral syndrome characterized by a deficiency in self-initiated, motivated, and goal-directed behavior [ 59 ]. It constitutes a prevalent and significant issue among bvFTD cases [ 7 ] and is associated with poor treatment outcomes [ 59 ]. Regarding neuropathology, apathy has been linked to diminished orbitofrontal metabolic activity and disruption of the fronto-subcortical circuits [ 60 ].…”
