The Common Cross-Connected Stage for the 5L ANPC Medium Voltage Multilevel Inverter

Wind power is one of the most promising emerging renewable energy technologies for distributed generation (DG). In this paper, a new nine-level active neutral-point-clamped (9L ANPC) converter is proposed for the grid connection of large wind turbines (WTs) to improve the waveform quality of the converter output voltage and current. Therefore, the bulky passive grid filters can be reduced or even removed. The topology, operating principles, control schemes, and main features, as well as semiconductor device selection of the proposed converter are presented in detail. The floating capacitor voltage control based on redundant switching states and capacitor prioritization is detailed. A comparison between the new topology and other existing 9L topologies is presented to illustrate the characteristics and performance of the new converter. The proposed 9L ANPC converter is studied in the case of the grid connection of a 6-MW WT without using passive grid filters in DG systems. Simulation and experiment results are presented to validate the proposed converter topology and control schemes. The proper operation and the compliance to the harmonic limit standards of the filterless grid-connected WT system are verified by simulation results.Index Terms-Active neutral-point clamped (ANPC), distributed generation (DG), filterless grid connection, harmonic limit requirement, large wind turbine (WT), multilevel converter, power quality.

Abstract--Power electronic converter-fed high performance AC drives belong to high-tech industry and are one of main factors for energy saving and productivity growth. This paper reviews present state and trends in development of key parts of controlled induction motor drive systems: converter topologies, modulation methods, as well as control and estimation techniques. Following topologies are described: Two-and Multi-level Voltage Source Converters, Current Source Converters and Direct Converters. Among the modulation techniques are briefly presented: conventional bipolar and unipolar PWM, space vector modulation (SVM) with extension for multilevel converters, harmonic control techniques, variable frequency modulation (hysteresis, nearest level, and model predictive techniques). About the control strategies, the generic torque control methods are described in two groups: linear and nonlinear controllers. In linear group are presented field oriented control (FOC), direct torque control (DTC) with voltage SVM, and DTC with flux vector modulation (DTC-FVM). The group of nonlinear control include: classical switching table based hysteresis DTC, direct self control (DSC) and predictive DTC scheme. Also, selected simple flux vector observers/estimators are discussed.

This letter introduces a new series of multilevel (ML) converters based on the ML clamping concept. By applying this technique, a ML clamping unit (MCU) conveys additional levels for synthesizing the output waveforms of a diode-clamped ML dcac power converter. The basic building block of the ML clamping scheme is the ML clamping cell, which is composed of a pair of dc sources associated with one single-pole/triple-throw type of switch arrangement. The number of series-connected ML-clamping cells will set the number of levels of the synthesized waveform. By depending on the MCU arrangements, different converter configurations can be derived, namely, the common clamping and the modular types. Both approaches can be accomplished by employing classical three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) technology. Thus, the overall structure of the resultant converter is kept simple, wherein the number of parts count can be reduced, when compared with conventional NPC counterparts. In this letter, emphasis is given on the common clamping converter configuration. The attractiveness of the proposed ML concept is evidenced by conducting a comparative cost analysis. Experimental results are presented as a practicality proof of the proposed ML power converter.Index Terms-DC-AC power conversion, multilevel (ML) systems, power electronics.
