The Comparative Analysis of Optimal Designed Web Expanded Beams via Improved Harmony Search Method

Abstract: Abstract-This study aims at comparing the optimum design of two common types open web expanded beams: with hexagonal openings, also called castellated beams and beams with circular openings referred to as cellular beams. The minimum weights of both beams are taken as the objective functions while the design constraints are respectively implemented from The Steel Construction Institute Publication Numbers 5 and 100. The design methods adopted in these publications are consistent with BS5950 parts. The formulati… Show more

“…They are created from root beam sections by conducting a rebuilding process: cut the web of the original section in a definite model and re-weld these two pieces to each other. There are various open web beams in the literature such as beams having hexagonal openings referred to as castellated beams (Abedi Sarvestani, 2017; Erdal, 2015; Morkhade and Gupta, 2019; Redwood and Demirdjian, 1998; Sherbourne, 1966), beams with sinusoidal openings called sinusoidal beams (Durif and Bouchair, 2016; Martin et al, 2017; Pimenta et al, 2015), and beams with circular openings in its web called cellular beams (Erdal et al, 2011; Erdal and Saka, 2013; Pachpor et al, 2014; Saka et al, 2013; Sonck and Belis, 2015). In this study, cellular beams are used for the beams of the structural systems.…”

“…As the total beam depth increases, section modulus as well as inertia moment also increases. Hence, while the total weight of beam decreases, the capacity of the section increases (Altifillisch et al, 1957; Erdal, 2015; Sherbourne, 1966).…”
