Abstract:Selenium (Se) is an essential element for animals. It mainly occurs in two forms; inorganic and organic. It was discovered by Berzelius in 1817 and its role as a micronutrient for the animal's health remained unknown till 1957. It has many health-beneficial effects and acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, and immune modulator. It is an integral part of many proteins and acts as a cofactor.
