The Complicated Relationship Between the Dark Triad and Emotional Intelligence: A Systematic Review

Abstract: The study of emotional intelligence (EI) and its relationship with the dark triad has emerged as a popular research area. However, the complex nature of the dark triad and EI, including multiple measures for assessment, has led to inconsistent findings. A systematic review was conducted to focus on the multifaceted nature of the dark triad traits. Included studies must have been conducted with adult samples using standardized EI and dark triad measures. Forty-eight studies were identified; all bar one reported… Show more

“…The authors emphasize that grandiose and vulnerable narcissism should be considered separately rather than combined into a total score because grandiose narcissism is positively related to EI, while vulnerable narcissism negatively related to EI. Also, Walker et al, (2021) indicate that primary psychopathy is positively related to EI but secondary psychopathy is negatively related to EI. Therefore, future empirical research on the relationship between the dark traits and EI should be conducted focusing on facet-level analysis.…”

“…Next, the present study employed short self-report measures of the Dark Triad and emotional intelligence, which could have affected socially desirable responsiveness in an effort to present themselves in a favorable light. Moreover, associations between EI and dark triad measures are complex and different on the facet level (Walker et al, 2021). The authors emphasize that grandiose and vulnerable narcissism should be considered separately rather than combined into a total score because grandiose narcissism is positively related to EI, while vulnerable narcissism negatively related to EI.…”

“…Therefore, employers should consider providing emotional intelligence training as a tool of improving self-esteem to their employees, which can sequentially improve the organizational culture of respect for others. Especially, emotional intelligence training is much needed for employees with higher covert (vulnerable) narcissism, given the fact that vulnerable narcissism is negatively associated with emotional intelligence and it was also associated with higher use of expressive suppression (as a response modulation/response-focused process) (for reviews see Walker et al, 2021Walker et al, , 2022. In other words, employers should invest more time, money, and effort to make emotional intelligence training successful because it may be more difficult to improve the emotional intelligence of employees with high covert narcissism due to their lower capacity of emotional regulation.…”

“…EI can be assessed as an ability (Mestre et al, 2016) or as a set of personality traits, typically self-rated (Walker et al, 2021). Ability EI is measured with objective tasks that require knowledge and processing of emotional information.…”
