The construct validity of the multidimensional aptitude battery: A word of caution

Abstract: Results of an hierarchical factor analysis with university students (N = 101) do not support the construct validity of the Multidimensional Aptitude Battery (MAB). Although the MAB Full Scale IQ seems to be a valid measure of general mental ability, the construct validity of the Verbal and Performance scale IQs is not supported. Therefore, the Verbal and Performance IQs should be interpreted with caution, if at all. In addition, re‐analysis of previous investigations of the MAB underscores the importance of as… Show more

“…Because the FIQ scale of the MAB is regarded as a valid indicator of true dgT (Carless, 2000;Kranzler, 1991;Lee, Wallbrown, & Blaha, 1990), these findings conform to the large body of research suggesting that faster speed of information processing is associated with higher general mental ability. This was particularly evident for the RT-g correlation recorded at the 1-back task and suggests that the 1-back task is sensitive to individual differences in mental speed.…”

“…The MAB-II is a broad-based evaluation of neurocognitive ability based on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (correlation 0.91). 19,20 This is a computer-administered test that yields 3 summary scores (full-scale IQ, verbal IQ, and performance IQ) based on subtests of vocabulary, arithmetic, information, comprehension, similarities, digit symbol, picture arrangement, object assembly, picture completion, and spatial thinking. Similar to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence ScaleRevised, the MAB-II full-scale, verbal, and performance IQ scores are standardized to age with a mean of 100 and an SD of 15.…”

“…Measures of reliability and construct validity for full-scale IQ have been demonstrated. 19 Results on the MAB-II may inflate IQ estimates, but this systematic bias will be present in all subjects and therefore not affect group comparisons.…”

“…These scores were then combined to yield a full scale IQ score (Jackson, 1984). Previous research has demonstrated that this full scale IQ score measures general mental ability in a multitude of age groups (Wallbrown, Carmin, & Barnett, 1988, 1989Lee, Wallbrown, & Blaha, 1990;Kranzler, 1991;Carretta, Retzlaff, Callister, & King, 1998).…”
