The COSMIN checklist for evaluating the methodological quality of studies on measurement properties: A clarification of its content

Abstract: BackgroundThe COSMIN checklist (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments) was developed in an international Delphi study to evaluate the methodological quality of studies on measurement properties of health-related patient reported outcomes (HR-PROs). In this paper, we explain our choices for the design requirements and preferred statistical methods for which no evidence is available in the literature or on which the Delphi panel members had substantial discussion.Me… Show more

“…In all the reported studies only a reliability analysis was conducted and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no studies were performed to identify and quantify the sources of inaccuracy that occur in the assessment of ankle strength by means of a HHD. Therefore detailed studies about the quality of clinical measurements are strongly encouraged [28] with the purpose of establishing reliability, reproducibility, and validity of such measurements [29].…”

“…In response to analysis of the pilot results, 28 questions were amended or deleted (22 of these questions which pertained to satisfaction with health and TSS services were collapsed into 2). The construct validity of the T4S was then checked using the COSMIN quality assessment tool for measurement studies (Mokkink et al, 2010).…”

“…The Consensus-Based Standards for the Selection of Health Status Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) tool was used to evaluate the methodologic quality of the included studies (22,23). Two raters (YMC and MH) assessed the quality of all included studies independently using a new 4-point-scored COSMIN checklist (24).…”

“…Two raters (YMC and MH) assessed the quality of all included studies independently using a new 4-point-scored COSMIN checklist (24). This checklist is a standardized tool for assessing the methodologic quality of studies on measurement properties (22,23). The checklist consists of 10 separate sections, each assessing a different measurement property.…”
