The Coupling Between Tropical Meteorology, Aerosol Lifecycle, Convection, and Radiation during the Cloud, Aerosol and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2Ex)

Abstract: The NASA Cloud, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2Ex) employed the NASA P-3, Stratton Park Engineering Company (SPEC) Learjet 35, and a host of satellites and surface sensors to characterize the coupling of aerosol processes, cloud physics, and atmospheric radiation within the Maritime Continent’s complex southwest monsoonal environment. Conducted in the late summer of 2019 from Luzon Philippines in conjunction with the Office of Naval Research Propagation of Intraseasonal Tropical Os… Show more

“…Case‐study simulations with 1 km horizontal grid spacing are performed using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS; Cotton et al., 2003; Saleeby & van den Heever, 2013) for the NASA Cloud, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP 2 Ex; Reid et al., 2023, S.3.2). Includes a coarse and high‐resolution simulation of a cold pool that occurred west of Luzon (simulation CS‐TropOce‐1km; Text S1 in Supporting Information ; and CS‐TropOce‐100m; Text S1 in Supporting Information ; Figure 1c).…”

“…AMPR has been used in past field campaigns including the Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX) (Houze et al 2017) and the Cloud, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes, Philippines Experiment (CAMP 2 Ex) (Reid et al 2023). Previous work with AMPR imagery has explored the ability to detect and distinguish various microphysical environments or dominant precipitation types within cloud and precipitation structures using all four channels in concert.…”
