The crystal and molecular structure of a hydrogen-bonded complex between 1-methylthymine and 9-methyladenine

Abstract: Crystals of a 1:1 hydrogen-bonded complex between 1-methylthymine and 9-methyladenine can be grown from an aqueous solution containing equimolecular quantities of the two compounds. The crystals are monoclinic, with a--8-304, b = 6.552, c = 12.837 A, and fl--106 ° 50'. The space group is P21/m, with two base-pair complexes in the unit cell. The structure was refined with three-dimensional data taken with copper radiation. The positional coordinates and anisotropic temperature factors of the heavy atoms were ob… Show more

“…An example where optional fields are useful is in comparison of Watson-Crick, Hoogsteen and reverse Hoogsteen hydrogen-bond patterns (Hoogsteen, 1959(Hoogsteen, , 1963Saenger, 1984). The graph set of the Watson-Crick pattern is characteristic, but the graph sets of the other two types are identical to one another even though their hydrogen-bond patterns are not.…”

“…Therefore, such bivalent NPs will have to carry two different functional biomolecules at their surface, covalently bound via thiol linkers. To accomplish DNA hybridisation in non-denatured, chromatin triplex formation as described by Hoogsteen (1963) is necessary. As triplex hybridisation with DNA probes is rather weak, new DNA derivates, such as locked nucleic acids (LNA) and peptide nucleic acids, were developed to form more stable bindings (Johnson & Fresco 1999a, Buchini & Leumann 2003, Seidman & Glazer 2003.…”
