The crystal and molecular structures of hexaaquacopper(II) benzenesulphonate, toluene-4-sulphonate and D-camphor-10-sulphonate

Abstract: from diffractometer intensity measurements. The overall packing arrangements in the three structures are broadly similar, but whilst the Cu n ions in the arylsulphonates are in elongated, near tetragonally distorted, octahedral environments, that in the o-camphor-10-sulphonate is better described as a rhombically distorted octahedron. Details of these, and related structures, may be rationalized in terms of Jahn-Teller distortions and hydrogen bonding.

“…The dimensions and conformation of the norbornane ring system agree well with those of other substituted camphors (Allen & Rogers, 1971;Bear & Trotter, 1975;Baert & Fouret, 1978;Couldwell, Prout, Robey, Taylor & Rossotti, 1978;Phillips & Trotter, 1977;Rendle & Trotter, 1975). “…However, full structural data for only one first-row transition metal ion, Vin (Cotton, Fair, Lewis, Mott, Ross, Schultz & Williams, 1984), and one second-row transition metal ion, Ru m (Bernhard, Btirgi, Hauser, Lehmann & Ludi, 1982), forming [M(H20)6]X3 complexes have been reported. The p-toluenesulfonate anion (pts-) has proved successful in the past in crystallizing hexaaqua ions such as those of Ru n and Ru In (Bernhard et al, 1982), Cu n (Couldwell, Prout, Robey, Taylor & Rossotti, 1978) and Zn n (Hargreaves, 1957). We report here the structure of the p-toluenesulfonate salt of [Ti(H20)6] 3+, [Ti(H20)6](p-CH3C6H4SO3)3.3H20, (I).…”

“…2). The layered structure of (1) is isomorphous with that of the analogous copper salt of camphor-10-sulfonic acid (Couldwell et al, 1978), although detailed parameters differ because of the Jahn-Teller effects involving the cation in the copper case and because of differing anion conformations. The structures of a number of related phenylsulfonate salts which have been characterized are also of this general layered type.…”

“…Chiral layered materials of this type (Cao, Garcia, Alcal& Burgess & Mallouk, 1992) offer potential for enantiomeric separations by intercalation and we are investigating layered materials derived from chiral sulfonic and phosphonic acids. Only one simple metal salt (copper) of camphor-10-sulfonic acid has been structurally characterized previously (Couldwell, Prout, Robey, Taylor & Rossotti, 1978). Here we present the crystal structure of [Ni(H20)6][D-camphor-10-SO312, (1).…”
