The Cultural Context Model: Therapy for Couples With Domestic Violence

Abstract: This article offers a brief analysis of heterosexual dominance within various cultures toward a larger understanding of domestic violence. It then describes the Cultural Context Model, developed over 15 years of experience treating domestic violence in its broader context, utilizing separate "culture circles" for men and women before and during couple therapy. It then identifies guidelines for assessment and intervention with a discussion of the special issues raised when substance abuse is involved.

CW then supports a practically applied constructionist perspective on the client's (family) system (Almeida & Durkin, 1999;Atwood & Conway, 2004). The discourse on therapy, counselling and consultancy aims at combining traditional healing and psychotherapeutic approaches (Moodley & West, 2005).…”

“…The practice theory is evolving, becoming highly sophisticated and less polarized, political, and categorical. For example, in recent years, feminist family therapists have developed couple therapy approaches for addressing violence in intimate relationships (Almeida & Durkin, 1999;Berns, Jacobson, & Gottman, 1999;Bograd, 1999;Bograd & Mederos, 1999;Goldner, 1999). Feminist research into family life has documented the ways in which gender is a central organizing feature of couple relationships, pointing to the validity and importance of addressing gender issues in therapy (Hare-Mustin, 1986;Heyn, 1997;Hochschild, 1989;Luxton, 1980).…”
