The current and future burden of heart failure in Portugal

Abstract: Aims Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome with significant social and economic burden. We aimed to estimate the burden of HF in mainland Portugal over a 22‐year time horizon, between 2014 and 2036. Methods and results Heart failure burden was measured in disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs), resulting from the sum of years of life lost (YLL) due to premature death and years lost due to disability (YLD). YLL were estimated based on the Portuguese mortality rates r… Show more

“…Despite scientific advances, heart failure (HF) remains a major health problem, with estimates of 26 million individuals affected worldwide (Savarese & Lund, 2017). Recent projections in Europe suggest that in the next two decades, HF prevalence will increase 2–3‐fold as a result of the aging of the population and improved survival (Danielsen et al, 2017; Gouveia et al, 2019). HF causes significant symptom burden, high mortality and morbidity, and extensive use of health care services (von Lueder & Agewall, 2018).…”

“…Information on current realities in HF care and outcomes would support the physicians and health care policymakers in their efforts to improve the systems of HF management, also through the optimal allocation of funds for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HF, and to identify clinical problems that could be targets of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. [19][20][21] Moreover, the better understanding of contemporary HF epidemiology would also help in developing better management and educational programmes addressed to patients with HF and their caregivers. 22 Therefore, we performed study in order to determine the trends in hospitalization rates due to HF and related in-hospital mortality in the recent decade, with an additional focus on age-related and gender-related differences in investigated epidemiological patterns.…”

“…É também uma das principais causas de internações hospitalares, com custos diretos e indiretos elevados. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] É esperado que a prevalência de IC aumente devido ao aumento dos fatores de risco cardiovascular na população em geral e aumento da expectativa de vida. Pacientes idosos são mais propensos ao desenvolvimento de IC, bem como de internações por IC.…”
