The current landscape of imaging recommendations in cardiovascular clinical guidelines: toward an imaging-guided precision medicine

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide an overview on the role of CT scan and MRI according to selected guidelines by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA). ESC and ACC/AHA guidelines were systematically reviewed for recommendations to CT and MRI use in specific cardiovascular (CV) clinical categories. All recommendations were collected in a dataset, including the class of recommendation, the level of evidence (LOE), the specific… Show more

“…The value of advanced cardiac imaging is established in current guidelines [ 8 , 9 ]. In fact, for inconclusive echocardiography or in suspected cases of coronary abnormalities or cardiomyopathies, coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) are indicated [ 8 , 10 ].…”

“…In this complex and revolutionary scenario, in which guidelines help the translation of evidences into clinical practice [8], there is a clear need of updating the previously published documents on appropriateness for clinical/practical use of CCT [9][10][11][12].…”

“…Over the years, the role of CCTA has grown exponentially as it allows for plaque characterization and the visualization of the anatomy of the coronary and extra-cardiac structures [ 54 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 ]. Furthermore, CCTA is able to detect other life-threatening non-cardiac causes of chest pain such as acute aortic dissection (AAS) and PE [ 6 , 15 , 38 , 61 ].…”
