The De Martonne aridity index in Calabria (Southern Italy)

Abstract: In this paper, the annual rainfall and temperature values, measured in the period 1951-2016 in a region of southern Italy (Calabria), have been spatially interpolated using deterministic and geostatistical techniques in an R environment. In particular, Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Kriging with External Drift (KED) and Ordinary Cokriging (COK) were compared to evaluate the best suitability method in reproducing the actual surface. Then, the spatial variation of aridity in Calabria ha… Show more

“…Its climate is predominantly dry temperate, with 14.3 • C as annual average temperature and 480 mm of annual precipitation [55]. According to De Martonne's aridity index (I DM = 19.75), this zone is classified as semi-arid [56]. For almost 20 years, barley had been grown in this soil, with periodical sheep droppings additions, but it has remained uncultivated for the last 5 years.…”

“…Due to its dimension, the hydrographical system flowing in the basin includes waters deriving from several geological formations. The climate of the basin is largely influenced by its orography and its position in the middle of the Mediterranean basin [21][22][23]. Indeed, a hot summer Mediterranean climate, with very warm dry summers and mild rainy winters, characterizes the basin following the Köppen-Geiger classification [24].…”

“…Many previous studies have used aridity indices in different regions, as they measure the degree to which a region's climate lacks effective and life-promoting moisture [7]. Spatial and temporal variations of several indices were analyzed for Bahrain [8], Bangladesh [9], Turkey [10][11][12][13], Greece [7], Romania [14][15][16][17], Ethiopia [18,19], Iran [20][21][22], Pakistan [23], IP [24][25][26], Iraq [27,28], Extremadura in southwestern Spain [29], Serbia [30][31][32], India [33,34], the Middle East and North Africa [35], Calabria in Southern Italy [36], and southeastern Europe [37]. However, these studies were conducted over historical periods and do not project potential shifts under future climate change scenarios.…”
