The definite article in Romance expletives and long weak definites

Abstract: This paper focuses on some issues involving expletive articles and long weak definites in Romance (mainly Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Catalan), in comparison to DPs that elicit a strong reading. We show the similarities between expletive definites and long weak definites, and we argue for an analysis in common to other polarity items in terms of polarity sensitivity. We reach the conclusion that the definite article in Romance comes in two variants: the referentially unique variant (to be translated as t… Show more

“…The strong definites, as in (136), can be in preverbal position, while the weak definites are restricted in Spanish to postverbal positions, and they do not convey uniqueness. (137) is one of the examples provided by Espinal & Cyrino (2017); as we can see, here -as in the cases that Leonetti (1999a) argued satisfy uniqueness due to the stereotypicality of the situation-it is not implied that the surgeon had only one finger.…”

“…Let us now consider this variety of uses from a slightly more theoretical perspective. Part of the literature has distinguished three main uses of definite expressions (Vergnaud & Zubizarreta 1992, Longobardi 1994, Beyssade 2013, Aguilar-Guevara 2014, Espinal & Cyrino 2017: strong referential definites, weak definites and expletive definites. The strong referential definites have the wider distribution and convey the notions of familiarity and uniqueness.…”

“…The remaining phenomenon we would like to discuss in this section as exemplifying semantic expletiveness relates to the definite article present in inalienable constructions in Romance (Vergnaud & Zubizarreta 1992) and in long weak definite constructions in English (Poesio 1994;Barker 2005) and Romance (Espinal & Cyrino 2017). Consider the examples in ( 21) and ( 22).…”

“…They can also act as expletives or can obtain readings of bound variables, more similar to indefinites. See Espinal and Cyrino (2017) for a recent discussion of these readings. 9 As already seen in example (10) above, the definite has a suffixal nature in Romanian.…”
