The design coordination role at the pre-construction stage of construction projects

Abstract: The importance of the concept of prevention through design (PtD) to the alleviation of the problem of poor health and safety (H&S) management in the construction industry is widely acknowledged. It has been adopted in the regulatory framework for H&S in the UK construction industry through the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) which place on the project client obligations with emphasis on coordination of H&S at the preconstruction stage of the project by a client-appointed 'Princ… Show more

“…The construction industry plays a pivotal role in economic development. The long-term development of the construction industry is inseparable from reasonable project scheduling (Li et al, 2021;Zou et al, 2017;Ndekugri et al, 2022). This paper takes the extremely short construction period as the entry point and the allocation of labor resources as the variable.…”

“…Quantity take-off and cost estimation (U 37 ) are intertwined with alignment optimization (U 2 ) and schedule estimation (U 35 ), as any modifications to the design can have a significant impact on resource allocation, schedules, budget, and economics of the project [90,92]. This interrelationship is crucial for effectively coordinating the design, construction, and operation phases, allowing for timely adjustments and finetuned financial management [93]. The BIM Uses 5D cost analysis (U 36 ) and 4D construction planning (U 32 ) deepen cost estimation by integrating time and financial aspects into the BIM model, providing an extended perspective of the economic impact throughout the project cycle.…”

“…It aims to prevent or minimize hazards and risks by implementing safety features and hazard mitigation strategies, as well as considering human factors. Design for safety involves proactive planning [19], risk assessment [20], and the incorporation of safety standards and regulations [21], in order to enhance the overall safety and resilience of a system. In the context of resilience, a series of mathematical models and methods have been developed to evaluate resilience.…”
