Aim: The aim of this study was to develop and validate according to psychometric standards a self-administered instrument to measure the students' self-perceptions of the undergraduate clinical dental environment (DECLEI). Materials and methods:The initial questionnaire was developed using feedback from dental students, experts' opinion and an extensive literature review. Critical incident technique (CIT) analysis was used to generate items and identify domains. Thirty clinical dental students participated in a pilot validation that generated a 67-item questionnaire. To develop a shorter and more practical version of the instrument, DECLEI-67 was distributed to 153 clinical students at the University of Athens and its English version to 51 students from various dental schools, attending the 2012 European Dental Students Association meeting. This final procedure aimed to select items, identify subscales and measure internal consistency and discriminant validity.Results: A total of 202 students returned the questionnaires (response rate 99%). The final instrument included 24 items divided into three subscales: (i) organisation and learning opportunities, (ii) professionalism and communication and (iii) satisfaction and commitment to the dental studies. Cronbach's a for the total questionnaire was 0.89. The interscale correlations ranged from 0.39 to 0.48. The instrument identified differences related to school of origin, age and duration of clinical experience. An interpretation of the scores (range 0-100) has been proposed. Conclusions:The 24-item DECLEI seemed to be a practical and valid instrument to measure a dental school's undergraduate clinical learning environment.

ObjectivesTo identify medical students’ perceptions of their learning strategies including, learning habits, resources, and preferred teaching methods, in the Department of Surgery (DOS) of the King Abdulaziz University-Faculty of Medicine (KAU-FoM), in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.MethodsA cross-sectional descriptive study which was designed to identify students’ perceptions of their learning in the DOS of the KAU-FoM. A questionnaire was administered to a random group of 549 medical students, to explore student perceptions of their learning strategies including methods of learning and learning resources.ResultsThe majority believed that clinical session attendance is always important compared with lectures (88.9% vs 21.9%). Nevertheless, clinical sessions were selected as the third source of learning after learning from assigned textbooks and previous examination model answers. The majority (74.1%) believed that self-instruction at home is the preferred method of learning.ConclusionStudent perspectives should be taken into consideration prior to any future reforms of curriculum. Reforms should adopt a “think globally; act locally” educational strategy based on learner needs.

(thirteen items from the STEEM inventory) was used to measure perceptions of medical students on the learning environment in surgical theater. Mini-STEEM was administered to medical students of fourth and final year during their rotation in surgical theater at FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry. Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20 was used for non-parametric statistical analysis. Results: Questionnaire was filled by all 134 students, with a response rate of 100%. The mini-STEEM was shown to be a reliable tool to measure overall learning environment in the surgical theater of FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry. The overall mini-STEEM mean score was 37.66 which was below the midpoint score (39). Students' ratings were low for two subscales, namely: 'Atmosphere' and 'Operating experience. Discrimination subscale showed high ratings as no significant differences of perceptions were found between male and female participants. Conclusion: The medical undergraduates perceived the educational environment within the surgical theater of FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry below satisfactory. Results of the study implied that the environment required multiple measures for improvement in the surgical theater to promote surgical education in undergraduate medical students.
