The development of a short measure of physical function for knee OA KOOS-Physical Function Shortform (KOOS-PS) – an OARSI/OMERACT initiative

Abstract: Based on the use of accepted Rasch-based measurement methods and the compliment of countries, languages and OA severity represented in this study, our seven item short measure of physical function for knee OA is likely generalizable and widely applicable. This measure has potential for use as the function component in an OA severity scoring system.

“…The KOOS‐PS has been translated into 15 languages, including the 4 most widely spoken, and the HOOS‐PS has 10 translations. Following careful consideration, the working group agreed to recommend use of the KOOS‐PS and HOOS‐PS as measures of hip and knee function in the Standard Set 21, 22.…”

“…There is also an opportunity to conduct equating studies for other instruments measuring activity in THA and TKA, which potentially includes the KOOS [9], HOOS [5], or PROMIS Physical Function-Mobility [3] scales, particularly those subscales specifically assessing activity and the short or arthroplasty-specific forms such as the HOOS, JR and KOOS, JR [2,6]. These instruments are widely reported in studies of THA or TKA.…”
