The Development of Data Compression and Transfer System Between Observation Vessels and Ground Station via Satellite

Abstract

SJAMSTEC has developed a data compression and data transfer system between a observation vessel and a ground station via a satellite communication system. At the ground station, images of sea surface temperature and surface albedo are extracted from surface data obtained from observation satellites, and are proceeded to compress its volume to reduce communication cost. On the vessel, data obtained from oceanographic instruments are processed to extract an information to present phenomenon of ocean and are proceeded to compress its volume. With a connection between the computer on the ground station and the computer on the vessel via the Inmarsat satellite communication system, data are transferred to each side. Data transferred from the ground station to the vessel help scientists to understand ocean where they are located. Data transferred from the vessel to the ground station help scientists to understand vertical structures of ocean without touching to ocean and without waiting the vessel.
