The development of hypercalcemia in a patient with an ovarian tumor producing parathyroid hormone-related protein

Abstract: Hypercalcemia developed in a 34‐year‐old woman with a clear cell carcinoma of the ovary. Osseous involvement with the tumor cells was not present. Primary hyperpara‐thyroidism was absent. Operative partial resection of the metastatic supraclavicular lymph node, followed by radiation therapy, decreased her serum calcium concentrations. This case belongs to the category of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM). Detection of a significant quantity of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone‐related protein (PTH‐rP)… Show more

“…These findings suggest that the secretion of PTH‐rP from the uterine tumor was the predominant factor in the hypercalcemia. In regard to gynecologic malignant neoplasms producing PTH‐rP, various kinds of ovarian tumors have been reported 12,22 . However, in the uterus, the only tumors associated with PTH‐rP secretion were carcinomas 23,24 .…”

“…Similar to teriparatide, abaloparatide equally induces osteosarcomas in Fischer 344 rats in dose‐ and time‐dependent fashions . Indeed, PTHrP induces humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy, and it is also closely involved in breast cancer initiation, growth, and metastasis . PTH induces tumorigenesis through upregulation of periostin, which plays a complex role in tumorigenesis .…”

“…PTH-rP immunoreactivity was observed in small cell carcinomas of ovarian tumors [9]. In addition, cystadenocarcinoma is reported to be the major type of ovarian tumor associated with paraneoplastic hypercalcemia in humans [1,4,12,13]. Therefore, the ovarian adenocarcinoma in our case is suspected of affecting the pathogenesis of hypercalcemia associated with PTH-rP.…”

“…68(9): 979-982, 2006 In dogs, the most common epithelial cell tumors of the ovary are papillary adenoma and adenocarcinoma [2,7,10]. In humans, paraneoplastic hypercalcemia is reported to be associated with ovarian tumors [1,4,12,13]. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rP) is involved in the onset of paraneoplastic hypercalcemia [3,4,11].…”
