The Diagnostic Value of Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio as an Effective Biomarker for Eye Disorders: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) reflects a dynamic relationship between the innate (neutrophils) and adaptive (lymphocytes) cellular immune response. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to critically evaluate the literature regarding the use of the NLR as a reliable means to detect several ocular disorders. Our study was registered with the PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022314850). Three databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Web of Science, were searched on September 9, 2022, wi… Show more

“…However, all systemic changes found in patients with AMD are subtle and thus clearly distinguishable from the clear immunological activity observed in patients with GCA. Similar subtle immunological findings are observed for other prevalent causes of vision loss in the elderly [ 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. These aspects demonstrate the challenges in diagnosing GCA in the elderly, as they can have various other co-morbidities.…”

“…NLR and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio have been defined as inflammation biomarkers. Although they have usually been investigated as predictors of prognosis of some diseases, such as cancer ( Diem et al, 2017 ; Graziano et al, 2019 ; Mungan et al, 2020 ) and acute ischemic stroke ( Chen et al, 2020 ; Gong et al, 2021 ), papers for glaucoma are limited ( Ozgonul et al, 2016b ; Li et al, 2021 ; Shirvani et al, 2022 ). A retrospective study investigated the predictive value of NLR and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio levels in the progression and prognosis of patients with POAG and ocular hypertension ( Ozgonul et al, 2016a ).…”
