The diagnostic value of the foetoacinar pancreatic (FAP) protein in cancer of the pancreas; a comparative study with CA19/9

Abstract: Summary The serum diagnostic value of the foeto-acinar pancreatic protein (FAP protein), an oncofoetal pancreatic antigen, was tested in 201 patients. Of these, 112 suffered from malignant disease (57 patients had pancreatic carcinoma and 55, extra-pancreatic malignancies) and 89 had benign disease (49 patients with hepato-pancreato-biliary disease and 40 with other benign disease). FAP protein was measured by a competitive radioimmunoassay. In this technique, the normal cut-off level was 10% inhibition. This … Show more

“…Furthermore, our laboratory has identified the protein FAPP as an oncofetal isoform of BSDL (40). Last, the concentration of circulating BSDL (including FAPP) is enhanced during the development of a pancreatic cancer (41). Together these results may identify BSDL and FAPP as important agents linking thrombosis to pancreatic carcinoma.…”

“…Thrombosis is also a major complication in gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma, particularly pancreatic carcinoma (39). In addition to BSDL, pancreatic carcinoma cells express high levels of an oncofetal variant of the enzyme, the fetoacinar pancreatic protein (FAPP) (40,41), missing 10 of 16 proline-rich repeats at the C-terminal end of the protein but containing the V3-like loop region (42). This protein is found at elevated levels in most patients with pancreatic cancer (40).…”

“…Mouse mAb J28 directed against FAP was obtained as described previously [6,8]. A polyclonal antiserum against BSDL (pAs L64) was raised in rabbits [13].…”

“…Sustained searches for a reliable blood test have led to the evaluation of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) 5 , carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 6,7,8 , and other tumour-associated antigens such as CA 50 6 , CA 242 9 , foetoacinar protein (FAP) 10 and SPAN-1 11 amongst others, either alone or in combination. 12,13,14,15 Perhaps the best recognised of these is CA 19-9.…”
