Summary Data visualization has been increasingly important with the deployment of advanced measurement system and big data analyses in smart grid and low carbon energy systems. Research on information design, related technology, and visualization tools have been lacking. Here we systematically review the analyses and practice on data visualization in power and energy systems. Visualization related to different energy system applications, including smart grid, electric vehicle, and building energy consumption, are summarized first. Design principles are presented for large screen, personal computer, or mobile device based interface respectively. Geographical information system technologies for visualization design are detailed. The application of 3‐D technologies, animations, and AR&VR for energy system visualization are also described.

Comparing Eigenvector and Degree Dispersion with the Principal Ratio of a Graph

The principal ratio of a graph is the ratio of the greatest and least entry of its principal eigenvector. Since the principal ratio compares the extreme values of the principal eigenvector it is sensitive to outliers. This can be problematic for graphs (networks) drawn from empirical data. To account for this we consider the dispersion of the principal eigenvector (and degree vector). More precisely, we consider the coefficient of variation of the aforementioned vectors, that is, the ratio of the vector's standard deviation and mean. We show how both of these statistics are bounded above by the same function of the principal ratio. Further this bound is sharp for regular graphs. The goal of this paper is to show that the coefficient of variation of the principal eigenvector (and degree vector) can converge or diverge to the principal ratio in the limit. In doing so we find an example of a graph family (the complete split graph) whose principal ratio converges to the golden ratio. We conclude with conjectures concerning extremal graphs of the aforementioned statistics and interesting properties of the complete split graph.

Irrationality is a strong phenomenon in consumer behavior that significantly impacts final purchase decisions. Through holistic approaches, companies have become more oriented towards emotional experiences. This study investigates the emotional impact of Dove brand advertising appeals on the frequency and intensity of emotions experienced by Slovak consumers. A theoretical framework was created for the conceptual development of emotional appeals in advertising and their impact on irrational purchasing behavior. An online questionnaire was conducted using the scale of subjective emotional habitual well-being (“SEHP”) of the psychodiagnostic tool on a sample of 417 Slovak consumers. The results show that (1) advertising with emotional appeal has different effects on consumers’ purchasing behavior depending on their age, (2) advertising with emotional appeal affects consumers more negatively than positively, and (3) the use of emotional appeal in the advertising space creates an emotional connection with the brand. Our study shows that the current trends in the influence of emotional appeal can promote impulsive and irrational buying behaviors. Thus, consumers become part of the brand, creating an emotional connection between them. This connection can result in positive purchase decisions. Creating emotional appeal in cosmetic products also has social significance in building self-confidence, status, and beauty.
