The direct and indirect effects of bioactive compounds against coronavirus

Abstract: Emerging viruses are known to pose a threat to humans in the world. COVID‐19, a newly emerging viral respiratory disease, can spread quickly from people to people via respiratory droplets, cough, sneeze, or exhale. Up to now, there are no specific therapies found for the treatment of COVID‐19. In this sense, the rising demand for effective antiviral drugs is stressed. The main goal of the present study is to cover the current literature about bioactive compounds (e.g., polyphenols, glucosinolates, carotenoids,… Show more

“…Several flavones and flavone O -linked glycosides have been demonstrated to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 via targeting Mpro, 3CLpro, or RdRp in in silico and in vitro studies ( Alzaabi et al, 2022 , Jantan et al, 2022 ). Discovering SARS-CoV-2 spike blockers in natural products is a solid strategy for the prevention and/or treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection ( Tomas et al, 2022 ). Several dietary polyphenols have been shown to affect the interactions between the SARS-CoV-2 spike and ACE2 ( Schmidt, Hakeem Said, Ohl, Sharifii, Cotrell, & Kuhnert, 2022 ).…”

“…To this effect, RAS blockades are commonly prescribed in COVID-19 treatment [188] . However, due to the associated side effects of chemosynthetic drugs, considerations are shifting towards safer and more cost-effective alternatives from natural sources, among which are food-derived bioactive peptides [189] . Bioactive peptides offer promising therapeutic benefits and have received much attention from the food and pharmaceutical industries [190] .…”

“…The scientific community is in the search of compounds that can be most effective to fight against novel diseases, one such example of disease is COVID-19 (Tomas et al 2022 ). Natural products have been used as therapeutic agents for the treatment of a wide range of illnesses for thousands of years, having an important role in meeting the basic needs of human populations.…”
