The Dutch tariff: results and arguments for an effective design for national EQ‐5D valuation studies

Abstract: The objective of this study was to estimate a Dutch EQ-5D tariff and to determine in a simulation study using the dataset of the original UK valuation study, the number of health states and respondents needed to estimate a reliable tariff. In all, 300 Dutch respondents directly valued 17 states compared to 3000 respondents and 42 states in the original MVH protocol. The results reaffirmed differences in health-related preferences between countries, justifying the estimation of national tariffs. The mean absolu… Show more

“…Five questions are categorical (1-3 scale) and one question is on interval level (visual analog scale [VAS] 0-100) [10]. The Dutch language version of EQ-5D was used [4]. The Dutch EQ-5D translation has been performed using a forward-backward translation by the EuroQol Group and has been valued by standardized procedures throughout multiple countries (www.euroqol.org).…”

“…The EQ-5D categories measure five dimensions: mobility, self-care, activities of daily life (ADL), pain, and anxiety/ depression. For all states, utility indices were assigned, and in this study, the Dutch utility index or Dutch tariff was used [4]. The scale of the Dutch ariff ranges from À0.33 to 1.00 with higher scores reflecting higher QOL and 0 reflecting QOL equal to death.…”

“…The particular protocol for eliciting TTO valuations of EQ-5D health states used in the UK Measurement and Valuation of Health (MVH) study (Dolan, 1997) is widely used in part or full by other researchers. For example, it was used in the Netherlands (Lamers et al, 2006) and the US (Shaw et al, 2006).…”

“…The EQ-5D is a generic instrument for measuring health-related QOL, which has been developed and validated in a number of European countries. 7,8 The EQ-5D evaluates five dimensions of health status: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. Each dimension has three levels of assessment that include 'no problems' , 'some problems' or 'severe problems' .…”
