Abstract: Background. The diseases leading to the need for lung transplantation include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, histiocytosis X, and sarcoidosis.
