The EcoChip 2: An Autonomous Sensor Platform for Multimodal Bio-environmental Monitoring of the Northern Habitat

Abstract: This paper presents the EcoChip 2, an autonomous multimodal bio-environmental sensor platform for the monitoring of microorganisms in the northern habitat. The EcoChip 2 prototype includes an array of 96-wells for the continuous monitoring of microbiological growth through a multichannel electrochemical impedance analyzer circuit. In addition, the platform includes luminosity, humidity, temperature sensors and monitoring. The developed electronic board uses an ultra-low-power microcontroller unit, a custom pow… Show more

“…The fungal highway column consists of a small tube in which one medium section is in contact with the soil, while the second one, which is physically separated from the first, can only be colonized by bacteria when they are transported into it via fungal in-growth. Other sophisticated methods for in situ cultivation are iChip [92] and EcoChip2 [93]. They enable parallel cultivation and isolation of up to now uncultivated microbial species, and can elucidate the dependency of some organisms to one another, due to in situ growth factors, that cannot be simulated under standard laboratory conditions.…”

“…Market-available impedance analyzers can be found in portable formats, but their prices are prohibitive for large scale deployment. As an alternative to these instruments, low-power low-cost integrated chips exist with impedance analyzer capabilities [30][31][32][33] . These chips can be used as all-in-one-package solutions for low-cost impedance analysis, but are not as versatile as benchtop instruments and their excitation frequency often proves insufficient for microorganism characterization.…”
