The Ecological Footprint and Kuznets Environmental Curve in the USMCA Countries: A Method of Moments Quantile Regression Analysis

Abstract: This article examines the environmental Kuznets curve for the member countries of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA), using the ecological footprint as a measure of environmental degradation during 1980–2016. Panel data econometric methods are applied in this research, such as the cross-section dependence, unit root, cointegration and causality tests, and the new method of moments quantile regression (MMQR). The results suggest that the variables are characterized by a cross-section dependence, … Show more

“…Nonmarket-based regulation has the most salient inverted U-shape relation with EF, followed by green technology, market-based regulation, and education. Education is generally acknowledged to be a means for improving environmental sustainability (Gottlieb et al, 2012). However, we find education saliently increases built at the 25th to 90th quantiles and carbon and forest at the 10th to 50th quantiles, supporting the findings of Gangadharan and Valenzuela (2001) and Hill and Magnani (2002)…”

“…In this study, Machado and Silva's (2019) MQR with fixed effects is applied. It is a quantile regression panel data model with individual effects and models with endogenous explanatory variables (Gómez & Rodríguez, 2020). Moreover, this method is considered the most suitable one as it contains asymmetric and nonlinear relations by simultaneously treating heterogeneity and endogeneity (An et al, 2021).…”

“…At present, with the rapid development of tourism, the direct and indirect impacts on the local ecological environment have seriously affected the balance and sustainability of the tourist destination ecosystem. The ecological footprint is also called “ecological occupation” [ 24 ]. The ecological footprint model, as a model to measure the degree of sustainable development, has been widely recognized by academic circles in recent years, and scholars have also made relevant research by applying the tourism ecological footprint model.…”

“…Hettige et al [ 7 ] found a similar inverted U-shaped relationship between GDP and the toxic intensity of manufacturing industries. Much other empirical research has proved the validity of EKC in different regions of the world, including North America [ 8 , 9 ] and South-West Europe [ 10 ]. Some research has found similar results in China.…”
