The effect of dialysis type on left atrial functions in patients with end‐stage renal failure: A propensity score‐matched analysis

Abstract: We demonstrated that the left atrial structure and functions were better in the PD group suggesting that PD may be a relatively better option for the preservation and maintenance of the left atrial functions as compared to HD.

“…The development of atrial fibrillation (AF) after cardiac surgery has been associated with poor cardiac outcome . Several variables, including inflammatory mediators, age, or left ventricular (LV) function, have been shown to be involved in the development of post‐operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) . Sympathetic system activation may also be associated with POAF development, which has been reported to be reduced by the use of beta‐blockers before the procedure.…”

“…1 Several variables, including inflammatory mediators, age, or left ventricular (LV) function, have been shown to be involved in the development of post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF). [2][3][4] Sympathetic system activation may also be associated with POAF development, which has been reported to be reduced by the use of beta-blockers before the procedure. Many associated predictors such as left atrial (LA) volume, LV ejection fraction, or left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LVGLS) have thus been described, and can be measured by echocardiography before the procedure.…”

“…LVGLS is widely used and has been shown to offer better predictive value than LVRS, LVCS, and SR in the diagnosis and follow-up of cardiac diseases. 11,[22][23][24] of this effect. Moreover, all our patients showed increased strain values after HDST.…”

“…While SR reflects contractility, strain is considered to be an analogue of regional EF. LVGLS is widely used and has been shown to offer better predictive value than LVRS, LVCS, and SR in the diagnosis and follow‐up of cardiac diseases . It is a sensitive indicator of myocardial dysfunction, including ischemia, hypertrophy, infiltration, hypoxia, cardiotoxic drug use, myocardial rejection, and severe systemic disease .…”

“…Independent predictors of right ventricular dysfunction in multivariate regression analysis However, in the presence of regional systolic dysfunction, global systolic function may not correctly reflect changes in ventricular function.TDI is a validated technique for quantitative evaluation of left ventricular functions, but its measurements are angle dependent and are affected by global heart movements, which is an important limitation10 While strain imaging shows the dimensional changes (deformations)…”
