The effect of different acute concentrations of cadmium chloride on the frequency of micronuclei in AO rats

Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) is highly toxic heavy metal which may cause severe biological effects in vivo and in vitro. In this study, an evaluation of the acute Cd ability to trigger micronuclei (MNi) formation was carried out on 3-monthold male and female Albino Oxford (AO) rats using micronucleus (MN) test. Experimental animals were treated intraperitoneally with three different concentrations of cadmium chloride (CdCl2): 0.5, 1, and 2 mg CdCl2 per kg of body weight. Control animals received equal volume… Show more

“…The bone marrow of laboratory rodents is routinely used for evaluation of clastogenic and/or aneugenic effects (ÇELIK et al, 2009;DJELIĆ et al, 2006;BAJIĆ et al, 2008;DJELIĆ et al, 2008). Based upon the intriguing results of our previous study (POPOVIĆ-BUBUJUK et al, 2013) that showed the ability of CdCl 2 to induce micronuclei formation in three months old AO rats, regardless of sex, this study broadened the research by including 6 and 12 months old AO rats.…”

“…Furthermore, chronic Cd toxication leads to neoplastic-like alterations in the morphology of lymphocytes and monocytes, as well as hemolysis, vacuolization, denuclearization, and dislocation of the nucleus in erythrocytes (SULJEVIC et al, 2019). It was also suggested that chronic exposure to Cd showed cytotoxic and genotoxic effects on peripheral blood and bone marrow cells (POPOVIC-BUBUJUK et al, 2013).…”

“…We previously suggested that Cd induces micronuclei in bone marrow cells. Our previous study showed the ability of Cd to induce micronuclei formation in three months old AO rats (POPOVIĆ-BUBUJUK et al, 2013). Later, we included 6 and 12 month old AO rats of both sexes.…”
