The effect of different substrates on the growth of six cultivated mushroom species and composition of macro and trace elements in their fruiting bodies

Abstract: There is an ongoing interest in the production of mushrooms as food, and with their consumption on the rise, there is a need to establish different safety measures. In the present study, six mushroom species (Agrocybe cylindracea, Clitocybe maxima, Flammulina velutipes, Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinula edodes and Pleurotus eryngii) were cultivated on two commonly used substrates (A-based on alder and beech sawdust; B-based on oak sawdust and flax shives). The aims were to determine their growth and the accumulatio… Show more

“…In Poland, large-scale analyses have been conducted, among others, by Falandysz, whose numerous reports concern a wide spectrum of elements determined in many species of mushrooms collected in various sites in Poland and around the world [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Siwulski, Mleczek, and Rzymski have also carried out numerous studies on cultivated and wild mushrooms from non-contaminated and contaminated areas [ 26 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 ].…”

“…The standard conditions were applied: Radio Frequency (RF) power 1.2 kW, nebulizer gas flow 0.7 L min −1 , auxiliary gas flow 1.0 L min −1 , plasma gas flow 12.0 L min −1 , viewing height for radial plasma observation 8 mm, detector CCD (Charge Coupled Device) temperature − 40 °C, signal accusation time 5 s for 3 replicates. A Mars 5 (CEM, Matthews, USA) microw ave sample preparation system was used for sample digestion 29,30 .…”

“…The chemical composition of fruiting bodies is usually highly dependent on substrate chemistry-with different substrate types and/ or supplements increasing or decreasing macro-and trace elements of nutritional value (Poniedziałek et al, 2017;Siwulski et al, 2019).…”
