We read with interest the recent article by Bania et al. concerning the effects of hyperglycemia on cocaineinduced seizures and lethality in mice. 1 Although the data demonstrate that hyperglycemia was surprisingly not detrimental, in fact a protective effect against cocaine-induced lethality was suggested. We would like to propose an alternative hypothesis. As noted by Bania et al., hypoglycemia commonly occurs in the setting of cocaine toxicity. 2 We question why the diagnosis of hypoglycemia was neither considered nor excluded as a contributing cause for seizures and death in these animals.
