The effect of medium on selected life-history traits in three clones of Lecane inermis (Rotifera) from activated sludge

Abstract: We tested the effect of various culture media on life-history traits in three clones of the rotifer Lecane inermis, a potential bulking control agent. Four types of media were tested: a filtrate of activated sludge, mineral water, and each of these media enriched with molasses. The number of live and dead individuals and the number of amictic eggs were counted during the 14-day experiment, and the egg ratio (ER) and mortality rate were calculated. We found that the rotifers were well adapted to the changes in … Show more

“…Contrary to chemostat conditions, such a culture method eliminates the risk of rapid selection against sex. These lineages were subjected to a variety of conditions, including a wide range of temperature, starvation periods, media, and feeding regimes Pajdak-St os et al 2011), and only one lineage was observed to produce males and resting eggs.…”

“…Then, 1 ml of aluminium chloride, AlCl 3 , or aluminium sulphate, Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , solution was added. The Al-salt solutions were enriched with molasses (Greenland Technology, Poland) as a medium [14]. The culture plates were incubated at 8, 15 and 20°C, and the number of alive and dead rotifers was checked after 24 h of exposure.…”

“…Both species of rotifers were reported to occur in activated sludge [16][17][18][19]. L. inermis is well documented to feed on biofilm, unicellular, and filamentous bacteria [20][21][22][23],…”
