The effect of new method of suspension on quality of life, satisfaction, and suspension in patients with finger prostheses

Abstract: Patients with finger amputation usually use a prosthesis with a simple suspension technique, yet many of these patients experience atrophy and subsequently loss of appropriate suspension. This paper presents a new method of suspension and showed that using this approach improved satisfaction and suspension in patients with finger amputation.

“…Thus, if at least 1 cm of mobile phalanx remains on the stump, the better the rehabilitation prognosis will be due to greater adherence and active retention. 1 This case presented a favorable prognosis because the remainder of the stump was more than 1 cm high, sufficient for a considerable adhesion of the silicone, without the need for medical adhesives. These adhesives are widely used in cases where the prognosis is not favorable to retention.…”

“…In addition to the grasping force reduction, the patient's participation in society and his self-esteem are greatly affected. 1 Prosthetic reconstruction after finger amputation can optimize the function and improve patient satisfaction. However, it is important to state that the prosthesis has to mimic the natural structure, reproducing shapes, lines, and colors, to act discreetly and attract less social attention.…”

“…Treatment of traumatic injuries requires immediate intervention, whereas congenital deformities need elective surgery. Additional causes for elective surgeries include the management of chronic conditions, such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and Dupuytren’s contracture, or cancer resection [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The highest incidence rates of finger amputations are found in children younger than five years and adults over sixty-five years [ 2 ].…”
