The Effect of Outer Space and Other Environmental Cues on Bacterial Conjugation

Abstract: Bacterial conjugation is a highly ubiquitous and promiscuous process, by which a donor bacterium transfers a large portion of genetic material to a recipient cell. This mechanism of horizontal gene transfer plays an important role in bacterial evolution and in the ability of bacteria to acquire resistance to antimicrobial drugs and disinfectants.

“…In line with our observations, previous work has reported on substantial differences between levels of transcripts versus proteins of the T4SS, with higher transcription levels in poor media compared to rich media. In contrast, western blot of the corresponding proteins revealed elevated expression in rich media compared to the poor media 64 . Taken together, algal exudates may impact post-transcriptional regulation of genes involved in bacterial conjugation.…”

“…HGT is a powerful force that shapes the evolution, diversification, and adaptation of bacterial communities and provides, for instance, a platform for the spread and persistence of ARGs ( Piscon et al., 2023 ). Today, three canonical mechanisms of HGT are recognized, including transformation, transduction, and conjugation ( Dubnau and Blokesch, 2019 ).…”
