The effect of the strength and wetting characteristics of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA-based adhesives on the bond strength to dentin

Abstract: Objectives: This study investigated the effect of the strength and wetting characteristics of adhesives on the bond strength to dentin. The experimental adhesives containing various ratios of hydrophobic, low-viscosity Bis-M-GMA, with Bis-GMA and TEGDMA, were made and evaluated on the mechanical properties and bond strength to dentin. Materials and Methods: Five experimental adhesives formulated with various Bis-GMA/Bis-M-GMA/TEGDMA ratios were evaluated on their viscosity, degree of conversion (DC), flexural … Show more

“…In all of the present washing groups, the residual TEGDMA monomer was significantly reduced compared with the NT group. TEGDMA is a more hydrophilic monomer 54 than the organic solvent alcohol, making it easier to remove in an aqueous agent such as water, and therefore showing a lower residual level. However, the amount of monomer detected in all of the washing groups in this study was far below the level that causes cytotoxicity.…”

“…Resin dissolution occurs when the resin gets in contact with the solvents that present a close solubility parameters [11]. The solubility parameters of bis-GMA and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate are 18.6 and 20.5 MPa 1/2 , respectively [12]. The Hildebrand solubility parameter for eucalyptol was estimated to be 17.6 MPa 1/2 , and it is capable of dissolving polymers with solubility parameters ranging between 15.5 and 21 MPa 1/2 [13].…”

“…In addition to the nature of Bis-GMA monomer which is a viscous component due to the presence of hydrogen bonding, caused by hydroxyl groups in its molecule, as well as presence of aromatic rings. 16 Tetric-N Bond contains UDMA monomer which acts as a diluent. 17 Moreover, this evidence might reflect the difference in blends of monomers between both adhesives used in this study.…”
