“…In some studies, several free radical scavengers were used to prevent the development of MS in TM [7][8][9][10][11][18][19][20][21][22][23]. Mattson et al reported that copper zinc superoxide dismutase and catalase and deferrioxamine prevented the development of MS [19].…”

“…Vitamin E is a well known hydrophobic antioxidant that is effective in many biological reactions; alpha-tocopherol, as the most potent stereoisomer of vitamin E, has been shown to scavenge peroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and superoxide anion radicals, thus acting as an important inhibitor of lipid peroxidation in membrane systems [15]. In human subjects, Uneri et al [16] showed comparable results, with prior studies, using topical vitamin E. CAPE is a biologically active ingredient of propolis with several interesting biological properties including: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, immunostimulatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-invasive, anti-metastatic and carcinostatic activities [7]; its molecular mechanisms have not been fully elucidated, however, CAPE is known to be a specific inhibitor of the transcription factor NF-kB [8]. Moreover, CAPE has been shown to induce apoptosis by activation of Fas in human breast cancer cells via NF-kB inhibition [17].…”

“…Although considered a simple procedure with considerable benefits, it can have complications [13]. Several studies indicate myringosclerosis as the most frequent complication of this procedure [1,8,[14][15][16]. The present study aims to identify predictive factors for the appearance of myringosclerosis after short-term tube insertion and, therefore, to identify risk groups and techniques that can potentially be responsible for the development of this complication.…”

“…When the deposition of crystals occurs only on the tympanic membrane, which is the most frequent location, it is named myringosclerosis [1,[7][8][9]. This process may assume clinical importance if it is able to interfere with the transmission of the sound vibrations through the structures of the middle ear [1,10].…”
