Abstract:Purpose of reviewThe aim of this article is to review recent literature on partial hospitalization and day care in order to answer the following questions: (1) For what percentage of patients otherwise hospitalized is partial hospitalization a good alternative?(2) What is the (cost)-effectiveness of partial hospitalization in comparison with full hospitalization? (3) What is the (cost)-effectiveness of partial hospitalization in comparison with outpatient treatment and day care? Recent findings Partial hospita… Show more
“…more effective on social disabilities at discharge, as well as at the 3-and 12-month follow-up assessments. Detecting this effect for the first time was perhaps facilitated by the large sample size and may be explained by a core principle of day hospital treatment, 30 namely, that the patient remains rooted in his/her normal surroundings and social role during the acute crisis rather than being uprooted and staying day and night on an inpatient ward. Evaluating acute day care in an international RCT presents several challenges, and this trial had its particular strengths and weaknesses.…”

Given the explorative character of the present study, further prospective studies are needed in order to cross-validate findings on the potential criteria for allocating acute mentally ill either to day-hospital or inpatient treatment.
Both day-care- and inpatient rehabilitation were mostly successful, even if day-care patients were more burdened at intake. Therefore day-care rehabilitation can be seen as a good alternative to inpatient rehabilitation.
