The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment, Economic Growth, Industrial Structure, Renewable and Nuclear Energy, and Urbanization on Korean Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Abstract: This study analyzes the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth, industrial structure, renewable and nuclear energy, and urbanization on Korean greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 1981 to 2014. The cointegration relationship of the variables is examined using autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds test. The test confirmed the long-run equilibrium among the variables. After that, the short-run and long-run coefficients are estimated by an ARDL error-correction model. The result shows t… Show more

“…People used to pursue purely the growth of material wealth. But now they pay more attention to the quality of the ecological environment, which promotes the development of green urbanization to a certain extent [36]. Some experts hold the view that economic growth is inseparable from the enrichment of human resources, which in turn has the effects of population agglomeration and industrial agglomeration and promotes technological progress and industrial upgrading [37].…”

“…Third, the renewable energy sources may bring revolutionary changes to the manufacturing industry. As a clean energy source with zero emission, although solar energy has long been used by the human society, the use of other forms of clean energy, such as nuclear energy [115], needs technical support to guarantee safety and achieve a high conversion rate. Similarly, wind energy [116], hydrogen energy [117] and geothermal energy [118] face difficulties when they are regarded as the primary energy source for manufacturing plants.…”

“…As there is volatility of the time variables, stability tests for the ARDL Model is required to avoid mis-specifications in the functional form (Kim, 2020). In this study, the cumulative sum (CUSUM) and the cumulative sum of squares (CUSUMSQ) tests were applied to ensure the stability of the selected ARDL Model.…”
