The effects of pathogen challenges on the performance of naïve and immune animals: the problem of prediction

Abstract: Predictive frameworks for performance under both physical and social stressors are available, but no general framework yet exists for predicting the performance of animals exposed to pathogens. The aim of this paper was to identify the key problems that would need to be solved to achieve this. Challenges of a range of hosts by a range of pathogens were reviewed to consider reductions in growth beyond those associated with reductions in voluntary food intake (VFI). Pair-feeding and marginal response studies ide… Show more

“…On the days after, CFA injection did not affect DM intake according to previous observations (Melchior et al, 2004). Additionally, digestibility of the main dietary nutrients remained constant after CFA injection, which agrees with the hypothesis that pulmonary inflammation does not affect the ability of the gastrointestinal tract to digest and absorb nutrients (Sandberg et al, 2007). Contrary to Rakhshandeh et al (2010), the gross efficiency of nitrogen utilization was not affected by the CFA injection.…”

“…In addition to the pre-absorptive mechanisms, dietary awareness and voluntary feed consumption respond to the nutritional (Tordoff 1991;Forbes 1998) and health (Johnson 1998;Sandberg et al 2007) status of the individual and how that status evolves over the long term. Post-absorptive balance of nutrient and antinutritional factors (ANF) monitored by the liver and hind-brain and long-term imbalances in protein and energy intakes influence meal intervals and learned feeding behaviors (Henry 1985;Black et al 1986;Tordoff, 1991;du Toit et al 1991;Forbes 1998;Coll et al 2007).…”
