The Effects of Sub‐lethal Doses of McPa on the Morphology and Yield of Vegetable Crops

Abstract: Summary. The effects of 2,4‐D, 2,4,5‐T, mecoprop and 2,3,6‐TBA were compared with those of MCPA on the morphology and yield of lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprout, carrot, parsnip, French and broad bean, red beet, spinach, turnip and onion. Although the relativie phytotoxicity of MCPA, 2,4‐D, 2,4,5‐T and mecoprop varied according to the crop, the morphological abnormalities produced by the different compounds were essentially similar, except that in lettuce and cabbage sperilic foliar symptoms appe… Show more

“…The symptoms described by Way (1962Way ( , 1964 for full-grown plants arc very similar to those we recorded, although his rates of application cannot be compared with ours. Way states (1964) that epinastic responses induced by 2,3,6-TBA were less marked than those induced by other compounds.…”

“…A useful summary of minimum recorded doses of 2,4-D causing crop damage has been made by Elliott & Wilson (1983), largely for herbicides in the liquid phase. This summary included data of Hemphill & Montgomery (1981) and Way (1964). Lettuce was rated the most sensitive, followed by tomato and cabbage.…”
