The Efficacy of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in Caustic Esophagus Injury: An Experimental Study

Abstract: Introduction. Ingestion of corrosive substances may lead to stricture formation in esophagus as a late complication. Full thickness injury seems to exterminate tissue stem cells of esophagus. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can differentiate into specific cell lineages and have the capacity of homing in sites of injury. Aim and Methods. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of MSC transplantation, on prevention of esophageal damage and stricture formation after caustic esophagus injury in rats. 54 rats were alloc… Show more

“…Previously, in an experimental study, we labeled rat BM-derived MSCs with fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) and tracked their homing behavior toward esophageal sites with caustic injury via positron emission tomography. The duration of the process was 4 h because of 18 F-FDG halftime (19). In this study, MSCs were not labeled.…”

“…MSC have been successfully labelled and tracked with 18 F-FDG, a positron-emitting glucose analogue that is taken up and metabolically trapped by cells, both in animal models [80,81] and in patient with acute myocardial infarction [82].…”
