The Electronic Structure of Anionic Halide Complexes of Element 105 in Aqueous Solutions and Their Extraction by Aliphatic Amines

Abstract: Element 105 / Hahnium / Chemical properties / Group 5 elements / Relativistic molecular orbital calculations AbstractTo study the complex formation of group 5 elements (Nb, Ta, Ha, and pseudoanalog Pa) in aqueous HCl solutions of medium and high concentrations the electronic structures of anionic complexes of these elements [MC1 6 ]~, [MOCLJ", [M(OH) 2 Cl 4 ]~, and [MOCI5] 2 " have been calculated using the relativistic DiracSlater Discrete-Variational Method. The charge density distribution analysis has shown… Show more

“…The [118]. By applying Born's theory of phase transition between the aqueous phase and the organic phase (mixed HCl/HF solutions and TiOA [77]) the extraction sequence Pa > Db > Nb was predicted, which is the inverse of that observed experimentally [77].…”

“…. They also found that tantalum has a tendency to form the pure hexahalide [ TaCl 6 ] 2- [Pershina 1994]. Tantalum's special place in the group is thought to be due to it being at a position in the group where "some effects are compensated by the others"; i.e., where the relativistic effects, which are expected to decrease the radius, are counterbalanced by the radial expansion expected due to the addition of another electronic shell.…”

“…Previously, Pershina et al predicted, based on the size of the complexed ions, that protactinium should have a higher partition coefficient than niobium, with hahnium in the middle between the two [Pershina 1994]. …”

“…This still more difficult and complex theoretical problem was undertaken by Pershina and coworkers in conjunction with our initial international collaboration of scientists from the USA, Germany, Switzerland, and Russia to perform experimental studies of the compounds of the heaviest elements. Systematic theoretical studies of heavyelement compounds using relativistic quantum-chemical calculations were combined with fundamental physicochemical considerations to make detailed predictions (23,24 ) of the volatilities of the halides and the partitioning of the transactinides and their lighter homologues between aqueous and organic solvents for specific experimental conditions. Pershina and Fricke (25) have recently completed a review of theoretical studies of the molecular properties of the transactinides.…”
