The elemental content of Niue Island soils as an indicator of their origin

Abstract: The major and trace element contents of 241 Niue Island lateritic soils were determined, mainly by X-ray fluorescence, to deduce soil origins. The analyses showed very low SiO 2 content, and a high content of Mg, P, V, Cr, Sr, Y, Hg, and α-counts, compared with other laterites worldwide. The distribution patterns are consistent with derivation by weathering from calcite and dolomite rather than from deposited volcanic ash. Weathering is a particularly novel explanation for the origin of the relatively high con… Show more

“…Soil mineral content consists primarily of gibbsite, goethite, crandallite, and boehmite (Whitehead et al, 1993). Wheeler et al (1999) summarized Niue dolomite textures and geochemistry: upper dolomites (À20 to +40 m above sea level) are calcian to stoichiometric, with major element composition ranging from 40.2 to 46.7 Mg mol%, 93 to 286 ppm Sr, and 144 to 462 ppm Na (n = 91) (Table A1).…”

“…The origin of terra rossa has also been investigated using grain size parameters, clay and debris minerals, rare earth elements (REEs) and Sr and Nd isotopic composition methods (Perrin, 1956;Yaalon and Ganor, 1973;Jackson et al, 1982;Whitehead et al, 1993;Borg and Banner, 1996;Durn et al, 1999;Mee et al, 2004). However, with pos-Resolving genetic issues of terra rossa provides important information for the study of karst processes.…”

“…Some TR is not the product of weathering in situ, and therefore does not have a close genetic relationship with the carbonate rocks underlying it, and probably does not provide the best opportunity for uncovering the behavior of trace elements during karst weathering (Feng et al, 2009a, b); however, trace elements have been used to determine TR origin (Whitehead et al, 1993;Ji et al, 2004;Mee et al, 2004;Muhs and Budahn, 2009;Muhs et al, 2010). Whatever the case may be, a sound knowledge of the geochemical behavior of trace elements during karst weathering and pedogenesis is required for logically tracing the TR origin (Feng, 2011).…”
