The Emerging Proteomic Research Facilitates in-Depth Understanding of the Biology of Honeybees

Abstract: Advances in instrumentation and computational analysis in proteomics have opened new doors for honeybee biological research at the molecular and biochemical levels. Proteomics has greatly expanded the understanding of honeybee biology since its introduction in 2005, through which key signaling pathways and proteins that drive honeybee development and behavioral physiology have been identified. This is critical for downstream mechanistic investigation by knocking a gene down/out or overexpressing it and being a… Show more

“…Furthermore, proteomics has also become a powerful tool for revealing the HGs morphology and physiology that supports honey bee biology (Altaye et al, 2019b;Hu et al, 2019). Notably, the potential of secreting RJ in the HGs of ITBs and RJBs is varied.…”

“…Significant progress has been made recently in understanding of the various aspects of the honeybee biology due to the advances in instrumentation and computational analysis utilized in proteomics studies [50]. For example, using two‐dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE), 3‐glucose oxidase, 1‐peroxiredoxin, and 1‐glutathione‐S‐transferase were identified in the RJ samples of Italian bees (ITBs, or A. m. lingustica ), high RJ‐yielding strain of bees (RJBs), and A. m. carnica bees (Carnica) [44].…”

“…The complexity of the RJ proteome is further increased by the abundant post‐translational modifications (PTMs) of the RJ proteins [50]. For example, analysis of the RJ proteome by a combination of liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry techniques, N‐glycopeptide enrichment strategies, and bioinformatics identified 25 N‐glycosylated proteins carrying 53 N‐glycosylation sites [54].…”

“…At present RJBs have the potential to produce more than 10 kg RJ/colony/year, which is 10 times more than for non-selected Italian bees [15][16][17][18]. Notably, China is the largest producer and exporter of RJ around the world, producing more than 4000 tons annually, with more than $2.5 billion market, which is 90% of the total RJ production globally and mostly exported to Japan, Europe, and the United States [12,19].…”
