The Enduring Case for Fertility Desires

Abstract: Persistently high levels of unintended fertility, combined with evidence that over- and underachieved fertility are typical and not exceptional, have prompted researchers to question the utility of fertility desires writ large. In this study, we elaborate this paradox: widespread unintendedness and meaningful, highly predictive fertility desires can and do coexist. Using data from Malawi, we demonstrate the predictive validity of numeric fertility timing desires over both four-month and one-year periods. We fi… Show more

“…Resolution of fertility intentions Stated fertility intentions are predictive of future fertility, even though they may be imperfect (Schoen, Astone, Kim, Nathanson, & Fields, 1999;Yeatman, Trinitapoli, & Garver, 2020). We examine how differences in fertility intentions among men and women may be resolved over time.…”

“…For example, Iacovou and Tavares ( 2011 ) distinguish between expected fertility as the number of children people expect to have while intended fertility accounts for factors beyond individuals' control, like personal circumstances or partner desires. Yeatman et al ( 2020 ) note that while much of the extant literature discusses intentions, what most survey data is capturing should be thought about as reproductive desires. Here, reproductive desires refer to wants related to reproduction, for example, whether a respondent would like to have any or more children, how long they would like to wait before having a child or getting pregnant, and whether they have desires about their total number of children by the time they have finished childbearing, etc.…”
