Infrared radiation has wavelengths between 780nm and 1000μm. It is well absorbed by living organisms and is perceived as heat. The mechanisms of action of infrared rays on humans are still little known, however their effects on living tissues are well known, particularly useful in the treatment of various diseases and disorders, in the reduction of wound healing times, in weight loss, in non-surgical body remodelling, in photo-rejuvenation, in muscle recovery, in improving sleep quality, in relaxation and in many other applications in medicine, non-invasive aesthetic medicine, beauty, fitness and wellness. This brief communication aims to provide an overview of the use of infrared and related devices in these fields of application, grouping them according to (1) medical applications, (2) non-invasive aesthetic medicine applications and beauty treatments and (3) for home wellness use.

It is well known that heat therapies, including Finnish sauna, have various health advantages and thus long been performed worldwide since ancient time. Recently, we focused on physical nature of ceramic, which emit far-infrared ray upon heating. Accordingly, we developed ceramic beads, whose electromagnetic wave profiles are almost identical to those of a black body, a perfect far-infrared radiator. A bathtub, equipped with computerized hot water circulation system, was first filled with the ceramic beads. Those beads in the bathtub were heated by circulating hot water at 50 ℃ which was drained out thereafter, and then a bather was laid in a supine position and covered with the heated ceramic beads in depth of 5-10 cm except the facial-cranial region and sandbathed for 15 minutes. In this minireview, we briefly overview the physiological response to the far-infrared sandbathing and the immune impacts. Finally, some discussion was done for the logical and mechanical basics and future therapeutic possibilities.

Thermal images are widely used for various healthcare applications and advanced research. However, thermal images captured by smartphone thermal cameras are not accurate for monitoring human body temperature due to the small body that is vulnerable to temperature change. In this paper, we propose ThermalWrist, a dynamic offset correction method for thermal images captured by smartphone thermal cameras. We fully utilize the characteristic that is specific to thermal cameras: the relative temperatures in a single thermal image are highly reliable, although the absolute temperatures fluctuate frequently. To correct the offset error, ThermalWrist combines thermal images with a reliable absolute temperature obtained by a wristband sensor based on the above characteristic. The evaluation results in an indoor air-conditioned environment shows that the mean absolute error and the standard deviation of face temperature measurement error decrease by 49.4% and 64.9%, respectively. In addition, Pearson’s correlation coefficient increases by 112%, highlighting the effectiveness of ThermalWrist. We also investigate the limitation with respect to the ambient temperature where ThermalWrist works effectively. The result shows ThermalWrist works well in the normal office environment, which is 22.91 °C and above.
