The Environmental Problem of Olive Mill Waste Water in Morocco: Data Analysis and Characterization

Abstract: This work proposes a comparative study between several provinces in the region of Marrakech Safi concerning the pollution generated by the industrial units of crushing olives, in particular the volume of olive mill wate water (OMWW) and the polluting load. A physicochemical and bacteriological characterization of the OMWW issues from different industrial olive crushing units was also carried out, the result found showed a high polluting power of the OMWW that differs from one unit to another depending on the m… Show more

“…It is worth noting that this parameter alone may not provide an immediate indication of the mineral content (Paredes et al, 2005). The obtained results align with findings in the literature(Gueboudji et al, 2021;Benaddi et al, 2022). Specifically, a value of 23.07 mS/cm was measured, denoting a substantial salt content in these effluents, caused by the practices of salting during olives preservation.…”

“…This value belongs to the conductivity range (between 10 and 50 ms/cm)[Tsioulpas and al., 2002]. However, the polyphenol content (0.321 g/L) remains relatively low but is within the range of the literature (0.1 and 17.5 g/L)[Benaddi and al., 2022]. The OMW are rich in organic matter as shown by the values of COD (10560 mgO 2 /l) and BOD 5 (410 mgO 2 /l), these are relatively low to the amounts cited by other researchers[Bargougui and al., 2019] (Table1).…”

“…In Morocco, water resources are in danger because of discharges from industrial activities [Smahi et al 2013;Benaddi et al 2022a]. These discharges are loaded with organic matter, heavy metals, and phenolic compounds [Dregulo and Bobylev 2021;Benaddi et al 2021; Benaddi et al 2022b].…”
