“…This correlation suggests that the LAD of G. index is a globally synchronous event between low (Nocchi et al, 1986) and high (this work) latitudes and is useful in denoting the position of the Eocene/Oligocene boundary.…”

“…The Eocene/Oligocene boundary interval is generally associated at low latitudes with a number of biostratigraphic events, among others, the LADs of hantkeninids and Turborotalia cerroazulensis, associated with the younger part of Chron C13R (Nocchi et al, 1986;Berggren and Miller, 1988). In Austral regions, Jenkins (1971) suggested that the LAD of Globigerinatheka index served to approximate the position of the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, although the actual boundary level was, as subsequently recognized by him and most other New Zealand investigators, placed within the brief Globigerina brevis Zone, which succeeds the LAD of G. index (see, however, a recent synthesis by Edwards et al (1988) that equates the Eocene/Oligocene boundary of New Zealand with the LAD of G. index and the Whangaroan/Runangan Stage boundary).…”

“…On the basis of paleomagnetic data (Hailwood and Clement, this volume) the Eocene/Oligocene boundary is estimated to occur at about 122 mbsf via correlation to the Umbrian sequences (Nocchi et al, 1986). Above the inferred Eocene/ Oligocene boundary we recorded the F0 of small-sized specimens named Catapsydrax cf.…”

“…The identification of Chron 13N at the top of Core 114-703A-13H suggests that the Eocene/ Oligocene boundary would fall lower in the missing portion of Core 114-703A-13H (Nocchi et al, 1986). …”

“…From several studies of low-latitude sections in Italy and Spain, it was observed that the extinction of disc-shaped discoasters is coeval with the extinction of Globigerinatheka index (Nocchi et al, 1986Monechi, 1986). Moreover, it slightly predates the Eocene/Oligocene boundary defined by planktonic foraminifers, the extinction level of Hantkenina and Cribrohantkenina.…”
